| September 17 | Note date change for this meeting. Join us at the residence of fellow member Brenda Rivera, 211 East 18th Street, NYC, Apt. 6B, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. By subway, you can take the 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R, and W to Union Square (14th Street), or the L to 3rd Avenue (14th Street). Brenda will give us a presentation on growing succulents in low-light conditions, using examples from her collection of growing plants in north and east windows. This invitation, at Brenda’s request, is also being extended to the Indoor Gardening Society, the Bromeliad Society, the Begonia Society, and the Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society. This sounds like a really good meeting, so we look forward to seeing you all there. |
| October 15 | Winterizing Your Cacti and Succulents |
| November 19 | Dr. Ivan Black will give us a presentation on Gymnocalycium and Notocactus plants, a very popular group of plants that flower easily and require minimal care. Ivan will have some plants on hand and will discuss care and cultivation. |
| December 17 | Holiday party. |
| January 21 | Dr. Ivan Black will give us a presentation on Rebutia and Sulcorebutia plants, a very popular group of plants that flower easily and require minimal care and space. Ivan will have some plants on hand and will discuss care and cultivation. |
| February 18 | George Cambourakis will give us a presentation on “Winterizing our indoor cacti and succulents”. This presentation was to have been given back in October 2009 but, as you may recall, the October meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather and confusion over the new meeting space and date. Although it is now February, our plants still need winter care. And judging by how our winter is going so far, it may not be warm enough until July. This presentation will cover all the different heat, light, air, and water requirements that each genus requires during their dormant period, pest and insect control, and past experiences, both good and bad, during this sensitive dormant period of the plant's life cycle. |
| March 18 | We will have a slide presentation entitled “Succulent Plants of the Cape Province”, one of CSSA’s slide Library programs. It is a tour from Capetown and the Cape of Good Hope into the mountains east of Capetown to the Great Karoo, with slides also from Bushmanland, before going on to Namaqualand and the Richtersveldt. It is a photo cornucopia of succulent plants, so if you enjoy succulents in the wild, this show is for you. |
| April 3-4 | Connecticut Cactus & Succulent Association Show and Sale. At Naugatuck Valley Community College, 750 Chase Parkway in Waterbury, CT. (Exit 15 off I-84). |
| April 15 | The slides from the CSSA did not arrive on time last month for our meeting, so we will now have the slides ready for this month’s meeting. We will have a slide presentation entitled “Succulent Plants of the Cape Province”, one of CSSA’s slide Library programs. |
| May 20 | Fellow member Brenda Rivera will give a presentation on low light succulents. While we all love barrel cacti and desert roses, many of us simply don't have the natural light to grow the many succulents adapted to full sun. We peruse books with plants sitting in south and west-facing picture windows and lament our northern and eastern exposures. But take heart, for there are many succulents (even cacti) that will grow and flower in north and east-facing windows. Join Brenda Rivera for a discussion of the culture of succulents that can be grown in lower light. Brenda will also offer a plant clinic to members who are encouraged to bring in problem succulents for diagnosis. |
| June 17 | For all of us, June means the growing season is well underway, but June also signals the end of our “meeting” season, with no meetings during July and August. So, to pay homage to summer and to another successful year for our Society, we will have our annual plant contest and wine and cheese party. Members are requested to bring in their best cactus or succulent plant, one plant per member. Only one plant will be chosen for “Best in Show”. The prize will be the 2008 issues of the CSSA journal (three issues in total). |
